PSA and HSF Grant Scholarships

In a special collaboration, Parents Step Ahead and The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) came together to offer scholarships worth $2,500 to sixteen lucky high  school seniors. These scholarships were available for students in the Dallas area whose parents participated in at least two Parents Step Ahead workshops,  are attending college in the Fall of 2011 and applied for aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parents Step Ahead and HSF offered  these scholarships to assist students and their families with the college process and to provide access to a college education they could afford.

Jennifer Kurian, from Nimitz High School, is a recipient of one of these scholarships and will soon start at the University of North Texas in Denton to studying  Biology and a career in Pharmacology. “When I found out about the scholarship opportunity Parents Step Ahead was offering, I applied as soon as I could. All I can say is that  hard-work most certainly pays off in the end, and I’m extremely thankful to God, Parents Step Ahead, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund for such an awesome gift.”

Parents Step Ahead is a non-profit organization whose mission is to recognize, educate, enable and empower parents to take a proactive role in the educational and  personal development of their children. Along with HSF, Parents Step Ahead worked to implement a parent program that could help guide parents in the  Dallas area with financial aid and the college application process. “It is important to offer this type of collaboration because we need to not only  support our youth with going to college but also their parents who have done so much to help them. By raising parent involvement in the college process we are  increasing the likelihood of these students going to college. That is why I would like to congratulate all the students and parents for winning the scholarship!”  asserted Lupita Colmenero, founder and chair of Parents Step Ahead.
