School Programs & Parent of the Year Parents Step Ahead partners with local school districts, corporations and community organizations to offer school‐based seminar programs for parents throughout the year. Each program includes: Seminars Provided by Experts Community Resource Fair A Free Meal Student Performances Childcare Raffle of Desktop Computers Every December, the yearlong program concludes with an awards ceremony recognizing the Parents Step Ahead “Parents of the Year.” A Selection Committee composed of local and national community and corporate leaders selects the winning essays. Honorees receive an award plaque and personal computer system, among other prizes. Parents Step Ahead Ambassadors The Parents Step Ahead Ambassadors Initiative is formed by teachers and school administrators who actively engage parents, particularly those who have never participated in their child’s school activities or visited their schools, to be part of the PSA seminars and programs. Parents Step Ahead thanks these Ambassadors for their dedication and support by raffling laptop computers for school use and professional development during the school‐based seminars throughout the year. Ambassadors are also eligible to enter into a raffle for educational professional development trip to Washington, D.C. as VIP guests of the LATINA Style National Symposium. In addition, they take part in meetings at the Department of Education and National Education Association, special tours of the White House and Capitol, and a special tour of the city. Parents Step Ahead Center – Our Vision Parents Step Ahead’s vision is to build upon its programs by establishing Parent Step Ahead Centers in local schools. It is an initiative of the first ever space inside of schools that will bring the home and school closer together. The Parents Step Ahead Center’s full‐time Social Worker, Psychologist and Center Administrator will provide advice and counsel related to emotional and educational well being, while establishing mental support systems for academic achievement— thusleading to higher graduation rates. The PSA Center will teach parents how to navigate their children’s education and see them through college. Also, the Center will help parents continue their education and educate them on various topics such as financial issues that includes saving money for the future, for college and buying a home.
