Irving, Texas. March 5, 2019

Lamar Middle School dad Arturo Gonzalez works full time at the city jail. But as his schedule allowed, he attended Parents Step Ahead Parent Curriculum classes at Lamar to refine his parenting skills. Taught by campus parent liaisons, the classes covered an array of topics ranging from family communication and financial literacy to health/wellness and education and technology. Gonzalez was one of 131 parents who completed the curriculum, and all were rewarded last month with a special field trip and luncheon. Parents met at Singley Academy to take a bus to Mountain View College for a tour and presentation. The parents then returned to Singley for a luncheon catered by Babe’s and remarks from Fernando Natividad, Irving ISD Executive Director of State/Federal Programs and Compliance. In addition, Lupita Colmenero, founder of Parents Step Ahead, spoke about the importance of parental involvement in student success then gave away prizes. Although Gonzalez was the lucky winner of the desktop computer, all parents who participated benefitted from the invaluable tips shared through the curriculum.
