Twenty-one
years ago, in a modest apartment in Dallas, realizing a million
hopes and dreams, El Hispano News was born. At the time, the
Hispanic population was a little more than half a million and the
city had only one Spanish language newspaper. El Hispano News
represented a necessary alternative and pioneered the way for other
Spanish-language publications to enter the market. But, more
importantly, the newspaper is an integral part of the life of the
Hispanic families who rely on it for information, guidance and
representation..
In 2006 to celebrate our 20th anniversary, we decided to create a
program that would continue the newspaper’s tradition of community
service. That was the genesis of our educational outreach
initiative, “Parents Step Ahead”. This initiative is a program
directed toward what we believe is vital for the success of our
community: EDUCATION, in particular the participation of parents in
the education of their children.
“Parents Step Ahead” initiative
has been a success thanks to the work and cooperation of an
extraordinary number of people, institutions and corporations, all
of whom recognized from the beginning the value of a program of this
type. Included are the employees and teachers of the selected
schools who volunteered their time and without compensation, and the
local and national corporations that recognize that education is the
key to a more promising future, and an appropriate avenue for their
social responsibility contributions.
Our vision is that “Parents Step Ahead” will
extend beyond local boundaries and become statewide and even
national in scope. It will expand under the valid promise that we
are parents who have to take the reins of the future of our
children.
